Archtung! The Lokal opens

The lions remembered the exhortation by the folks behind Jump Cafe to pay a visit to The Lokal, a sister outlet of Sarnies in the Lion City. And they did. Housed in the same building as the Goethe Institut,  The Lokal is German for "a place to drink" or "a restaurant". Having been under the tutelage of strict German language teachers back in his university days, the lion was ashamed to say that he had not heard of the word before. Lol. Nothing German about the food or the decor here though. Its reminiscent of a bright and breezy Melbournian cafe with a laidback Aussie vibe due perhaps to its Australian owners who have tied up with Australian Chef Darren Farr. The lions see a little Straits Eclectic influence being given a contemporary slant courtesy of a respected design agency. The menu is equally eclectic offering heavy brunch pleasers like veal schnitzel burgers to light fillers like toasted banana bread with homemade yoghurt and roast chicken paninis. The lions opted for the platter of fresh mackerel and salmon smoked in-house over cherry woodchips (reminded them of the platter they had in Edinburgh) and a side of unfortunately dry homemade ricotta cheese. Coffee is consistently excellent here as well.

This place tends to attract a sizeable expat crowd. Wonder why... ... Check out the modish wooden ceiling fans (blades are made of wood!) and iced water served in churchy communion cup-like glass. Nice.
